What is Coated Label?

Otiket Coated Roll Label is a paper-based label type. Its semi-glossy surface maximizes print quality. It is the most standard and preferred paper type for printing.

Among general-purpose labels, coated labels are the "Price/Performance" champion; they are much more durable against sunlight, moisture, and friction than thermal labels, but more sensitive than plastic-based (PP) labels.

Technical Specifications

  • Raw Material: Paper-Based (Tearable)
  • Surface: Semi-Gloss, Smooth
  • Printing Method: Suitable for all printing techniques.
  • Suitable Ribbon Type: Wax Ribbon (Economical) or Wax-Resin Ribbon (More Durable)
  • Durability: Moderately resistant to heat and light, not resistant to water.

Online Label Expert Tip

The surface of the coated label is not porous like standard A4 paper; it has a smooth, slightly glossy layer, but despite this, it is not resistant to sun and moisture.

  • Incorrect Choice: If coated labels are applied to products or areas exposed to direct sunlight or used in wet and humid environments like bathrooms, they may yellow due to sun exposure or melt due to moisture.

  • Expert Solution: To protect coated labels against heat and moisture, we recommend applying cellophaning by ordering from the pro label section for your labels.

What is Cellophaning?: It is a transparent polypropylene (plastic-based) film layer applied to the surface of a printed coated label by heat treatment. It isolates the paper from the outside world.

Areas of Use

Coated labels are ideal for indoor use and areas requiring long-term storage:

  • Product packaging and carton labels
  • Food jar and bottle labels (Dry environment)
  • Barcode labels
  • Logistics and shipment tracking

Q&A

Are coated labels water and oil resistant?
No, coated labels are paper-based. While the coating makes them more resistant to slight moisture than thermal labels, they will deform and tear if directly exposed to water or oil. For 100% water resistance, you should check our "Opaque PP" labels.
Which ribbon should I use to print on this label?
The most suitable and economical solution for coated labels is "Wax Ribbon". If you want a more abrasion-resistant and permanent print, you can also use "Wax-Resin Ribbon". Printing without a ribbon (Direct Thermal) is not possible.
What is the difference between Eco Thermal label and Coated label?
The most fundamental difference is the printing method. Eco Thermal prints without a ribbon (with heat) and has a short lifespan (3-6 months), darkening over time. Coated labels, on the other hand, are printed with a ribbon, and the print lasts for years as long as the paper is not damaged, and it does not darken.
Which barcode printers are they compatible with?
Online Etiket coated rolls are 100% compatible with all desktop and industrial barcode printers with "Thermal Transfer" (Ribbon printing) feature, such as Zebra, Argox, Godex, Toshiba, and TSC.
