In printing, we are always honest with our customers. If someone comes to us and says, "Give me a thermal label that will stay on the box in the warehouse for 5 years," our answer is clear: "There is no such thermal label."
Thermal roll labels, printed using only heat without ink/ribbon, are inherently temporary solutions. The surface, which darkens through a chemical reaction, tends to revert to its original state or completely darken over time (with heat and light).
So, how long do different thermal labels last? Which one should you choose for your business?
1. Eco Thermal Label: The Short-Distance Runner (3-6 Months)
Eco Thermal is the most economical option without a protective layer. It is commonly used in logistics and shipping.
- Readability Period: Under ideal conditions (no direct sunlight, room temperature), the barcode remains readable for an average of 3 to 6 months.
- Risk: If exposed to sunlight, it yellows and fades within 1 week.
- Usage Area: Shipping labels (a package's life is typically 3 days anyway), greengrocer/butcher scale receipts, daily hospital queue numbers.
2. Laminated Thermal Label: The Mid-Distance Runner (6-12 Months)
Laminated Thermal is an Eco model with a clear protective top coat. This layer slows down the chemical reaction.
- Readability Period: Due to its resistance to light and moisture, it can last 9 to 12 months (or even a bit longer if stored well).
- Usage Area: Supermarket shelves, deli products (cheese, olives), short-term storage box labels.
If You Say, "I Need My Label to Last for Years"...
If your product is an archive box, an asset, or a spare part, and the label needs to be readable even after 2, 5, or 10 years, then you should not use Thermal Labels.
For such long-lasting applications, the solution is Thermal Transfer (Ribbon) Printing:
