In the world of wine, every detail matters. However, for white, rosé, and champagne (sparkling wine) producers, there's a critical parameter in label selection that red wine producers don't have to consider: Water and Cold.
It's not enough for your wine to look great on the supermarket shelf; its real test comes in a restaurant, in a bucket full of ice and water (Ice Bucket). If your label fails this test, your brand image will melt away in that icy water.
At Otiket, we have technically explained the question frequently asked by producers, "Why does my label fall off in water?", and the solution: Ice Bucket durability technology.

What is the Ice Bucket Test?
This is one of the toughest standards in the label industry. For a label to be considered "Ice Bucket Compatible";
- Duration: It is kept in icy water between +4°C and 0°C for at least 2 to 4 hours.
- Expectation: At the end of this period, there should be no bubbling, lifting from the edges, wrinkling, or separation from the bottle.
- Print Quality: Not only the paper, but also the ink and foils on it must be water-resistant and not run.
Technical Background: Why are Special Paper and Adhesive Needed?
When you put a standard paper label in water, it absorbs water, swells, and turns pulpy. A standard adhesive, when exposed to cold, crystallizes (freezes) and loses its stickiness, detaching from the glass.
To prevent this, two special components are used:
1. Wet Strength Paper
Special chemicals are added to the paper pulp during production. This allows the paper to repel water when it comes into contact with it, but its fibers continue to hold together tightly. It is very difficult to tear even when wet.
2. Ice Bucket Adhesive (Special Acrylic/Hotmelt)
These adhesives maintain their flexibility instead of hardening in the cold. They also prevent condensation water (sweat) forming on the bottle from getting between the adhesive and the glass and ruining the adhesion. It provides an "aggressive" hold.

Why is it Crucially Important for the Brand?
For a consumer or restaurant owner, a "Fallen Label" means:
- Perception of Quality Decreases: The question arises, "How much care did the producer, who didn't care about the packaging, put into the wine?"
- Brand Identity is Lost: When the label falls off, the bottle becomes "anonymous". When a customer looks at the bottle to remember the name of the wine they drank, they see bare glass. This kills the possibility of repeat purchase (re-order).
- Service Difficulty: For waiters, wet and disintegrating labels make serving difficult and do not look professional.
Comparison: Standard vs. Ice Bucket Label
| Condition | Standard Coated/Pulp | Ice Bucket Compatible Label |
|---|---|---|
| Refrigerator (Humidity) | Slight wrinkling, edge lifting. | Perfect appearance. |
| Icy Water (1 Hour) | Pulping, disintegration, falling off. | As solid as new. |
| Cost | Economical | Medium/High (Prestige Investment) |

Conclusion: Defy the Cold
Especially for your white and rosé wines, when choosing a label, you should look not only at the design but also at the technical specifications. Ice Bucket compatible labels ensure that your wine maintains its elegance until the last sip.
