What is Opaque Label? A Guide to Its Uses and Advantages

When entrepreneurs launching a new product or brand owners looking to refresh their packaging come to our workshop, the most common confusion they experience is this: "What's the difference between coated labels and opaque labels? Which one should I choose?"

As a printer, I answer this question as follows: If you don't want your label to tear, dissolve in water, or yellow over time, your solution is plastic. That is; Opaque Polypropylene (PP) Label.

Let's examine together what this marvelously durable material is, why it's so popular, and whether it's suitable for your product.

What is an Opaque (PP) Label?

Technically known as "Opaque Polypropylene," it is a petroleum-based (plastic) label type. The word "Opaque" in its name indicates that the material is not transparent, but rather has a white and covering background.

Unlike coated (paper) labels, it does not have a fibrous structure. Thanks to this;

  • It does not swell or bubble when exposed to water and moisture.
  • It won't tear even if you try to rip it by hand (but it will stretch).
  • It is much more resistant to outdoor conditions (sun, rain) than paper.

Thanks to these features, our opaque PP roll label models, which we produce especially for products stored under challenging conditions, are the most preferred solution in the industry.

Where Is It Used?

Based on my experience, I can say that Opaque PP is found wherever people say, "It shouldn't spoil, shouldn't fade, and should look stylish." Here are the most common areas of use:

1. Cosmetics and Personal Care

Shampoos, shower gels, lotions, and oils... It is essential for the label to maintain its integrity in humid and wet environments such as bathrooms. It also prevents the label from absorbing oil and getting stained (bleeding) on oily products (e.g., hair care oil).

2. Food and Beverage (Cold Chain)

Products placed in the refrigerator or stored in the freezer experience "sweating" (condensation). Paper labels absorb this water and fall off. Opaque labels, however, defy cold storage and moisture.

3. Chemicals and Cleaning

Detergents, surface cleaners, motor oils... Even if the chemical inside the product leaks out, it should not damage the print on the label. Opaque labels have chemical resistance.

Which Surfaces Is It Suitable For?
