There's a trend we've been seeing frequently on supermarket shelves in recent years: "Scan the code under the cap, enter the draw!" or "Scan the QR code, get a discount!"
These campaigns (Gamification) are a great way to boost sales. However, on the operational side, there's a very critical question: "How do we print a different code on each of thousands, even millions, of labels?"
This is where Otiket's area of expertise, the variable QR code roll label service, comes in. Let's detail this process, which is very different from standard label printing, by explaining how we ensure your campaign security.

What is a Unique Code? Why is it Important?
In standard label printing, one design is created and 10,000 copies are printed. However, the situation is different with draw labels. Although each of the 10,000 labels has the same design, the QR Code and Alphanumeric Code (e.g., A7X-29B) on them are completely different.
This system is called "Variable Data Printing." This way:
- Each code can only be used once (Security).
- You can track where each product is sold (Data Analysis).
- You prevent counterfeiting.
How Does the Process Work? (From Excel to Label)
If you want to have coded labels printed for your campaign, the process works as follows:
1. Database Preparation
Your software team or agency prepares the codes to be generated for the campaign in an Excel (.xls / .csv) file. (For example: a list of 10,000 rows, each with a different code).
2. Design and Matching
You send us the colorful design of the label (Your logo, "Enter the Draw" text, etc.). We import this design into our printing program and integrate your Excel file into the system.
3. Hybrid Printing and Control
First, we print the colorful background of the label. Then, using our high-speed industrial barcode printers, we apply each row from the Excel file onto the labels sequentially in black (Resin Ribbon). When each label comes out of the machine, the code on it is the next code in the list. It never repeats.

Security: "Scratch-Off" or Non-Removable Label
You wouldn't want campaign codes to be read by others while still on the supermarket shelf, would you? We use two methods for this:
- Scratch-Off Label: We can cover the code with a "scratch-off" layer (requires special processing).
- In-Packaging Application: We can produce labels from food-safe (PP Opaque) material and deliver them to be affixed inside chip or biscuit packages.
- Visible After Product Opening: We produce in suitable sizes for areas that cannot be read before the product is opened, such as under the cap or on the back of the bottle.
What Material Should Be Used?
Material selection is critical depending on your campaign type:
| Area of Use | Recommended Material | Why? |
|---|---|---|
| On Boxes/Cartons | Coated Paper Label | Low cost, sufficient for dry environments. |
| Beverages/Cold Chain | Opaque PP (Plastic) | Unaffected by moisture, code does not rub off. |
| Security Seal | Fragile Label | Breaks apart when attempted to be removed. |

Conclusion: Professional Solution for Error-Free Campaigns
Even the smallest error on a campaign label (e.g., an unreadable QR code or duplicate code printing) can lead to a significant loss of prestige for your brand. That's why you should manage this task with a printing company experienced in data processing.
