You’ve launched a campaign or set up a system for product tracking. Everything looks great until you hold the label up to a cell phone camera or barcode reader... Silence. It doesn't scan.
This situation results in both financial loss and significant reputational damage for a brand. So why doesn't a QR code that looks clear on screen work when printed?
The problem is usually hidden in the details of "Resolution (DPI)" and "Contrast". I'm explaining why we achieve zero errors with the variable QR code labels produced in our print shop and the technical criteria you should pay attention to.

1. The Resolution Battle: 203 DPI vs. 300 DPI
DPI (Dots Per Inch) is the number of dots per square inch. Standard desktop barcode printers typically print at 203 DPI resolution.
- Problem: If your QR code is small (e.g., 1x1 cm) or contains a lot of data (like a long URL), a 203 DPI printer will mix the dots together. The squares become blurry, and the edges are jagged. The camera cannot focus on it.
- Solution: We use industrial-grade 300 DPI and 600 DPI printers. These machines print even the smallest square of a QR code "razor-sharp." The result: lightning-fast scanning.
2. Ribbon Quality and Contrast Strength
For a barcode reader to work, the "Black" areas must be completely black, and the "White" areas must be completely white. Grayscale is the enemy of barcodes.
If a cheap or low-quality Ribbon is used, the blacks appear faded (smoky). Especially on glossy surface (PP Opaque) labels, poor quality printing causes glare, and the camera cannot see the code.
In our production, we use Resin Ribbon technology, which adheres 100% to the surface and creates a jet-black contrast. This ensures that the codes are readable even in the dimmest environments.

3. Relationship Between Size and Data Density
Our customers sometimes ask for "a very small QR code so it doesn't spoil the design." However, the laws of physics should not be forgotten.
- Rule: The more data you put into a QR code (long links, passwords, etc.), the more complex the code becomes, and the dots shrink.
- Mistake: Trying to fit a long link into a 10mm x 10mm area invites printing errors.
- Expert Touch: We will warn you during the design phase. We determine the safest minimum size (e.g., 15mm x 15mm) based on your data density.
4. "Quiet Zone" Violation
There must be an empty white area (Quiet Zone) around the QR code. If the colored background or lines in your design are too close to the QR code, the reader will get confused and may not detect the code.
In our pre-press control system, we millimeter-precisely adjust the safe area around variable data and prevent potential errors before production.
Conclusion: Don't Take Risks, Print Professionally
