Short answer: To design a label in Canva, use "Custom size" to enter your label's actual size in millimetres, leave 3 mm of bleed on each edge, keep text inside the edges and download as "PDF Print" with "Crop marks and bleed" turned on. If you download PNG, choose the largest size.
Canva is the easiest way for non-designers to create labels. But a design that looks great on screen can print blurry, with white edges or cut-off text. Here are the steps for print-ready labels in Canva.
1. Start With the Right Size
- In Canva, choose "Create a design" → "Custom size".
- Set the unit to mm. Starting in pixels mixes up the print size.
- Enter your label's actual size, e.g. width 60 and height 90 for a 60x90 mm bottle label.
Not sure of your size? See our label sizes guide first.
2. Turn On Bleed
In Canva, go to File → Settings → "Show print bleed". A dashed line appears around the design. Extend background colours and edge-to-edge images out to that line, so even a tiny shift in cutting won't leave a white line at the edge.
3. Stay in the Safe Zone
Keep important elements like your logo, product name, ingredients and barcode at least 2-3 mm inside the edge. Canva's margin guide ("Show margins") makes this easy to see.
Don't want to deal with size and bleed?
Our template tool gives you a PDF with bleed and safe zone ready; upload it to Canva and design on top.
4. Watch Image Quality
- Canva's own images and graphics are generally fine for print.
- If you upload your own logo, use the highest-resolution version. Logos saved from WhatsApp or Instagram print blurry.
- The more you enlarge an image in Canva, the lower its quality. See 72 DPI vs 300 DPI.
5. Keep Text Legible
- Use at least 6 pt, ideally 7-8 pt, for ingredients and legal information.
- Very thin and script fonts are unreadable at small sizes. A decorative font is fine for the product name, but use a simple one for body text.
- Avoid light text on light backgrounds. Contrast looks lower in print than on screen.
- For food labels, don't forget the mandatory information: mandatory information on food labels.
6. Colour: Screen vs Print
Canva works in RGB, while presses print in CMYK. Very vivid colours like neon green, electric blue and hot pink print slightly duller. If your brand colour is critical, avoid these tones or ask us before ordering.
7. Download in the Right Format
| Format | When? | Settings |
|---|---|---|
| PDF Print (recommended) | Always the first choice | "Crop marks and bleed" on, "Flatten PDF" off |
| PNG | If you can't get a PDF | Set the size to maximum; tick transparent background if needed |
| JPG | Not recommended | Compression reduces quality |
If you're designing a clear label, remember that white areas will print transparent. See our clear label guide.
The 5 Most Common Canva Mistakes
- Starting in pixels and adjusting the size "roughly" later.
- Not turning on bleed, leaving white lines at the edges.
- Pushing text right to the edge so it gets cut.
- Using a low-resolution logo.
- Sending a screenshot instead of a proper download.
