Logistics and Shipping Security: Make Sure Your Box Isn't Opened in Transit

In e-commerce and logistics, what happens on the "last mile" matters as much as the delivery itself. You may think your responsibility ends when you hand the parcel to the courier. The hard truth: ordinary packing tape is a 5-second obstacle for someone with bad intentions.

One of the biggest problems I've seen: the box reaches the customer, but the valuable item inside (a phone, jewelry, electronic parts) has been taken or swapped, and from outside the box looks untouched. That creates a crisis with both the courier and your customer.

So how do you guard against this invisible theft (pilferage)? The answer is a standard used by big logistics firms: tamper-evident security seals.

Why Isn't Ordinary Packing Tape Secure?

Clear or brown tape is great for packing but not designed for security. Cut it carefully with a blade and re-tape it, or warm it and peel it off, and it's almost impossible to tell the box was opened.

Security seals made for shipping security go across the flaps where the box closes, sealing it.

How Do Box Security Labels Deter Theft?

Your box passes through hubs, trucks and depots. A parcel with a box security label is a risky target.

  • Visual warning: often in bright colors, these seals silently shout "THIS PACKAGE IS SEALED".
  • Instant detection: if someone tries to remove the seal, "OPENED" or "VOID" stays on the box. A recipient who sees it knows to report it on delivery.
  • Psychological barrier: a would-be thief knows they can't open it without a trace and moves on to less protected parcels.

Standard Tape vs Security Seal

I always ask customers: "Is the value of what you're shipping lower than the cost of a seal?"

Feature Standard tape Security seal (VOID)
Removal traceNone or very little.A clear "OPENED" message.
Theft protectionNone.Strong deterrent.
UseGeneral packing.Valuable goods (electronics, pharma, jewelry).

The Right Choice for Your Business

If you ship in volume or send high-value items, use VOID seals across your box joints. They take seconds to apply and add very little work, but the security they give is priceless.
