Why Is the Transparent Label Winding Direction (Flow Direction) Important for Automatic Labeling Machines?

In the printing industry, the most disheartening scenario is this: 50,000 perfectly printed transparent labels arrive at the factory, but the production manager calls and says: "We can't load these rolls onto the machine; the labels are coming out upside down."

This has nothing to do with the quality of the label or the print itself. It is entirely about the "Unwind Direction."

If you are applying labels by hand, you can skip this article. However, if you are using an automatic labeling machine (applicator), when ordering transparent roll labels, you absolutely must know the answer to the question: "Should the head come first or the foot?"

What is Unwind Direction (Winding Diagram)?

It is an international standard that determines which direction your logo or design will enter the machine as the labels unwind from the roll (spool). Since the machine's sensors and applicator arms are fixed, if the label comes out in the wrong direction, it will be applied incorrectly to the bottle.

Since it's difficult to visually detect errors on transparent labels, the problem might not be noticed until the machine is running. Therefore, specifying the correct direction during the ordering process is critical.

4 Basic Unwind Directions (Standard Schemes)

There are 4 main directions most commonly used in the industry. When placing an order, you must specify these numbers or terms to your printing company:

  • Unwind Direction 1 (Top Off / Head First): As the label unwinds from the roll, the top part (head) of the design comes first. This is used if the bottle is upright and the machine peels the label from top to bottom. (This is the most common method).
  • Unwind Direction 2 (Bottom Off / Foot First): The bottom part of the design comes first.
  • Unwind Direction 3 (Right Off / Right First): The right side of the design comes first.
  • Unwind Direction 4 (Left Off / Left First): The left side of the design comes first.

Inside Wound or Outside Wound?

We've determined the direction, but we're not done yet. There's also the question of whether the label will be on the inside or outside of the roll.

  • Outside Wound: The labels are on the outer surface of the roll. You can see the labels when you look at the roll. 90% of machines use this system.
  • Inside Wound: The labels are on the inner surface of the roll. From the outside, you only see the liner. Some specialized printers, such as certain Epson color barcode printers, require this method.

Sensor Issue with Transparent Labels ("Black Mark")

While we're on the subject, let me remind you of another technical detail. Standard optical sensors may not be able to detect transparent labels (because light passes through them).

If your machine does not have an "Ultrasonic Sensor," you should ask your printer to print a "Black Mark" on the back of the label (on the liner). This black mark allows the sensor to understand where the label begins and ends. The position of this black mark is also important when determining the unwind direction.

How to Place a Correct Order? (Checklist)

To avoid mistakes, ask your production supervisor or machine operator these 3 questions before placing an order:

  1. When the label unwinds from the roll, should the Head come first or the Foot? (Unwind Direction)
  2. Should the labels face the outside of the roll or the inside? (Winding Direction)
  3. What should be the core diameter of the roll (spool)? (Usually 40mm or 76mm)
