A Firm Answer to Copying: What Is the "Maximum 3 Checks" Rule?

The biggest question for brands ordering security labels: "What if someone photographs my label and prints the same QR code on thousands of fakes?"

That's a fair worry for static QR codes (codes that just link to a website). But it doesn't work with our QR code security labels.

Why? Because our system has a scan counter and a maximum 3 checks rule. Let's see how this digital lock ties counterfeiters' hands.

A phone warning: this code has been checked 5 times before, the product may be fake

Scenario: How a Counterfeiter Gets Caught

Let's look through a counterfeiter's eyes:

  1. They buy your genuine shampoo in a shop.
  2. They scan and copy the QR code.
  3. They print it on 1,000 fake bottles and sell them.

This is where the maximum 3 checks rule comes in:

  • Customer 1 (genuine product): scans. System: "First check. This product is original." ✅ (safe)
  • Customer 2 (fake): scans. System: "Product is original. This code is being checked for the 2nd time." ⚠️ (warning)
  • Customer 3 (fake): scans. System: "Product is original. This code is being checked for the 3rd time." ⚠️ (final warning)
  • Customer 4 onward (red alert): System: "CAUTION! THIS CODE IS INVALID. It has been checked more times than normal. Your product may be counterfeit." ❌ (blocked)

Result: the codes on the other 997 fake bottles become invalid instantly. Buyers see the warning and return or report the product. The counterfeiter's whole run is wasted.

Why Allow 3 Checks Instead of 1?

"Why not lock the code after the first scan?" It's all about user experience.

A real customer might:

  • scan, find the page slow to load on poor signal and scan again (2nd check),
  • scan and then show a friend, who scans too (3rd check).

If we locked after the first scan, genuine customers would wrongly see a "fake" warning. The 3-check rule gives real customers flexibility while stopping mass copying.

Uncopyable QR Technology

Our dynamic QR security isn't a static image; it's a live database lookup.

Holograms can be physically imitated. A database-driven scan counter can't. Even if the code is physically copied, its digital function can't be. For physical protection on top, combine it with void and hologram labels.

Conclusion: Your Digital Police Officer Is on Duty

You can't put a guard next to every product, but you can put a label with the maximum 3 checks rule on each one. It fights counterfeiters even while you sleep.
