Short answer: The most popular materials for olive oil bottle labels are textured paper (boutique, handmade and premium look) and opaque PP (resistant to oil stains and moisture). On 250 ml and 500 ml glass bottles, front labels are usually between 60x90 mm and 80x120 mm; it's best to measure your own bottle. Choose sheet labels for small runs and roll labels if you have a filling line.
Olive oil is one of the most crowded categories on the shelf. Early harvest, cold pressed, extra virgin... Before tasting, all the customer sees is the bottle and label. That's exactly where a boutique producer can compete with big brands: the label.

Choosing the Material
Textured Paper: Boutique and Premium
If you sell early harvest, limited, family-farm or regional olive oil, textured paper is the right choice. Its surface can be felt by hand and looks matte and sophisticated, bringing the "special production" feel of wine labels to olive oil. It pairs beautifully with gold and cream tones. Opaque PP: Resistant to Oil Stains
Olive oil's biggest enemy is the oil that gets on the outside of the bottle during filling and use. Paper labels absorb oil and stain over time. Opaque PP is plastic film; it doesn't absorb oil, can be wiped clean and won't tear. Ideal for bottles used daily in the kitchen and for tins. Opaque PP sheet labels →
Clear and Metallized: To Stand Out
To show off the oil's green colour, use a clear label; for a luxury gift range, a silver metallized label helps you stand out.
| Need | Recommended Label |
|---|---|
| Boutique, early harvest, gifts | Textured paper |
| Daily use, risk of oil on the bottle | Opaque PP |
| Showing the oil's colour | Clear PP |
| Luxury gift range | Metallized or textured |
| Tins | Opaque PP |

Label Size for Olive Oil Bottles
Olive oil bottles (marasca, dorica, quadra, square) come in different shapes. Measure your own bottle:
- Measure the height of the flat area of the body. Don't let the label run onto the shoulder or base curves.
- Leave 3-5 mm top and bottom.
- If you use front and back labels, leave at least 10-15 mm between them at the sides.
- On square bottles (quadra), make the label 4-6 mm narrower than one face.
| Bottle | Front Label (approx.) | Back Label (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| 100 ml | 40x60 mm – 50x70 mm | 40x50 mm |
| 250 ml | 60x90 mm – 70x100 mm | 50x80 mm |
| 500 ml | 70x110 mm – 80x120 mm | 60x90 mm |
| 750 ml - 1 L | 80x120 mm – 100x140 mm | 70x100 mm |

What Information Should an Olive Oil Label Include?
Olive oil is a food product and its label must carry legal information. The basics:
- Product name and category (e.g. "Extra Virgin Olive Oil")
- Net quantity (ml or L)
- Best before date and lot number
- Storage conditions (e.g. "Store in a cool, dark place")
- Producer/packer details and registration number
- Origin
Olive oil often has extra rules (such as acidity or harvest year claims), so check the current olive oil regulations in the market where you sell. For general mandatory information, see our food label guide. Don't cram legal information onto the front: the front is for brand and story, the back for information.

Olive Oil Label Design Tips
- Tell your story: The region, olive variety and harvest method (early harvest, hand-picked) are reasons people buy.
- Dark background, light text: Cream and gold tones on black or dark green create a premium feel for olive oil.
- Less is more: Brand, product name, category and volume are enough on the front. A busy design looks cheap.
- Design a series: If you have early harvest, extra virgin and virgin ranges, keep the same frame and change the colour.
- Legibility: Fine script fonts look elegant but are unreadable at small sizes. Use a clear font for the product name.

Sheets or Rolls?
If you label bottles by hand in small to medium seasonal runs, sheet labels are the most practical and economical option. If your filling line uses a labelling machine, choose roll labels and remember to specify the unwind direction. See roll or sheet?
